If you have little one's or if you don't want a long hike, then stop by Jefferson Rock. The rock is named after Thomas Jefferson who stood in awe at that point overlooking the rivers.

Jefferson Rock is situated along the Appalachian Trail between the cottage and Lower Town. You'll love the spectacular views of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, and the water gap. Here's how Thomas Jefferson described it. . . "The passage of the Patowmac through the Blue Ridge is perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in Nature. You stand on a very high point of land. On your right comes up the Shenandoah, having ranged along the foot of the mountain a hundred miles to seek a vent. On your left approaches the Patowmac in quest of a passage also. In the moment of their junction they rush together against the mountain, rend it asunder and pass off to the sea.

Great view of the Shenandoah River above lower Harpers Ferry. Supposedly Thomas Jefferson said, "this scene is worth a voyage across the Atlantic."

Beautiful overlook! One of President Jefferson's most favorite views. Overlooks the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers from up above lower town Harpers Ferry. Lots of steps and uneven steps involved.

Visit the rock formation that overlooks the Shenandoah River just prior to its confluence with the Potomac River. The name of this landmark derives from Thomas Jefferson, who stood there on October 25, 1783, and for whom the view inspired the famous quote, "This scene is worth a voyage across the Atlantic". Check out NPS.gov for info on other great hiking trails in the area, like the Maryland and Loudoun Heights.
