Santorini… Akrotiri beach… By the sea, lies for many years a small, traditional cave, build by Uncle Nikolas with his own hands when he was young. Made with lots of love and passion, the cave offered a kind of shelter to himself and his little boat. Always by his side was his wife, Aunt Efstathia, whom her “magical” cuisine made everybody crazy. Unforgettable Spiros Marinatos, headmaster of the excavation project in the archaeological place in Akrotiri, suggested to Uncle Nicolas to alter this shelter in a small tavern, for the hungry workmen of the excavation, offering them traditional and delicious treats such as tomatoballs, fava, “chloro” cheese, spaghetti with sauce and plenty of fresh fish. Over the years, the cave grew fast known to the visitors of the island, since after their visit at the excavation they used to direct to the beach to taste Aunt Efstathias’ popular snacks and the rich in taste and spice wine of Uncle Nicolas. In 1981, the “Cave of Nicolas” went on to their daughter, Margarita, who had learnt the art of cooking from Mr Marinatos wife. Her love for traditional cuisine and local products, that herself and her husband, Nicolas grow, gave her a Gourmet Prize, as the best traditional tavern for 2007-2008 in Santorini. I suggest you try the tomato meatballs. A variation that has been made is the tomato meatballs with fish inside, which was also awarded as the best on the island and is worth a try. Another dish I suggest is the white roasted eggplant, the fava and then the main dishes. The moussaka of the old times stands out, a vegetarian dish, the lamb the fried, a fava risotto - so as a variation of the fava, a little more gourme, without the gourmet meaning higher prices. Generally, everything on the menu is made with simple ingredients, fresh and worth a try. Je vous suggère d'essayer les boulettes de viande aux tomates. Une variante qui a été faite est les boulettes de viande à la tomate avec du poisson à l'intérieur, qui ont également été récompensées comme les meilleures de l'île et qui valent la peine d'être essayées. La moussaka des temps anciens se démarque, un plat végétarien, l'agneau frit, un risotto à la fava - donc en variante de la fava, un peu plus gourmande, sans que la gourmande ne signifie des prix plus élevés. Una variante che è stata fatta sono le polpette di pomodoro con pesce dentro, premiate anche come le migliori dell'isola e che vale la pena provare. Un altro piatto che suggerisco sono le melanzane bianche arrosto, le fave e poi i secondi. Spicca la moussaka di una volta, un piatto vegetariano, l'agnello fritto, un risotto alle fave - quindi come variazione della fava, un po 'più di gourme, senza che il buongustaio significhi prezzi più alti. In generale, tutto sul menu è realizzato con ingredienti semplici, freschi e che vale la pena provare. Te sugiero que pruebes las albóndigas de tomate. Rewarded with a Gourmet prize in 2007-2008 for the best traditional taverna in Santorini. 'Nikola's cave' or 'i spilia tou Nikola' serves all the traditional delicacies of the island such as ntomatokeftedes, fava, fresh cheese, spaghetti with garlic and lots of fresh fish.
