堺の歴史を一目瞭然に知ることのできる博物館です。約1,330㎡の展示室には、古代･中世･近世･近代のコーナーに分けて歴史の流れを紹介しています。また春と秋にはテーマを絞った特別展も催されます。 堺を中心とした歴史、美術、考古、民俗、産業などの文化資料を調査、収集、保管、これらを活用した展示、研究、情報提供を通して市民の生涯学習と、文化の向上発展に資することを目的として、展示室･ギャラリーでの展示事業、視聴覚室･学習室･講義室での講座の開催などを行っています。
