lots of history here, good explanations, lovely views. kids like the cannons and fortified granite walls
30 min drive to learn about and see the remnants of Maine’s first defense against enemy intruders during the 19th century. Visit Fort McClary (fee of $1-3 to be left in dropbox) to see a beautifully restored hexagonal blockhouse. Next to it are a magazine and a brick rifleman’s house. Granite blocks from abandoned construction are scattered along the seashore.
