Castelo dos Governadores was built by the Arabs. After the Reconquista in the 13th century, the Algarve's military government was established here in the 14th century.

In the 16th century, a section of the city wall was used to construct a building for the governor's dwelling: the Castle of the Governors. At the end of this wall, close to the hospital wall, you can see a window from the Manueline period (1495-1520). And in front of the window, vestiges of the old wharf whence the caravels left for the Portuguese maritime discoveries.
