Bastion Oranje is a defensive work on the city walls of 's-Hertogenbosch. The name is due to the fact that this bastion was built for the State government. This was in 1634. This bastion was added to the wall because the distance between Bastion Vught and Bastion Baselaar was too large. Bastion Vught was near the Vughterpoort, where now Wilhelminaplein is located. Bastion Baselaar was on the current Hekellaan, where there is now a parking lot. Bastion Oranje was about half way and had a great shot at Het Bossche Broek. Bastion Oranje was built against the shore and the remains of the medieval city wall. A walltower was converted into a hollow bastion. This meant that there was a water feature inside the bastion. If anyone already came through, they still had to overcome the water. The bastion lost its defensive function in 1874 due to the Fortification Act. The walls of the bastion did retain the water retaining function. In 2009 the "Bastionder" information center was opened at the bastion. Here you can learn more about the history of the fortifications. The restored cannon "Boze Griet" is also located here.
