Dam square is the historical center of Amsterdam and the most central point if you take a look at the map. I wouldn't recommend to visit this overcrowded part of town, but IF you happen to be in the city center, take a look at some prominent buildings: Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), department store De Bijenkorf, Beurs van Berlage.
