Užupis is probably the most mystical and unusual neighborhood in Vilnius, east of the Old Town. It is often said that this place is a state within a state. Užupis began to develop as a residential neighborhood as far back as the 16th century, when bridges over the Vilnelė River were built. For a long time, most people in the area were Jewish, but many left the area during the Holocaust. 20th century In the middle of the 19th century, new quarters of artists' flats and workshops were built in the upper part of the district, and in the lower part near the Sereikiškės Park, the Vilnius Academy of Arts was established. The area has been proclaimed by the expanding community of art people as the Independent Republic of Uzupis with a separate government, constitution, tradition, celebration and even sheriff. So Užupis has long been known as the Bohemian area of artists, and is compared to Montmartre in Paris and Christiania in Copenhagen.

The self-proclaimed “Republic” of Užupis is Vilnius’ Bohemian and artistic district. It has its own anthem, constitution, president, bishop, two churches, the Bernadine Cemetery – one of the oldest in the city , seven bridges, and its own guardian called The Bronze Angel of Užupis, who was put in the centre of the district in 2002. Dating back to the 16th century, Užupis is one of Vilnius’ oldest districts and despite its current prestigious status, was formerly the city’s poorest area and home to a number of manual workers and a red light-district. Now its thriving creative community hosts regular fashion festivals, concerts, exhibitions and poetry evenings.
