Built on an old Roman temple that was later a mosque, Valencia Cathedral is predominantly Gothic in style, although it retains many elements from different periods, from Romanesque to Baroque. Work on the current plant began in the 13th century. Latin cross, ambulatory and dome over the transept. In the 15th century, the Chapter House (today the Chapel of the Holy Chalice), the dome, the Miguelete and the door of the Apostles were built. Also noteworthy are the Puerta de los Hierros, in the Baroque style, and that of the Palau or Almoina, Romanesque. It also houses the SANTO CALIZ. The Cathedral has been dedicated since the time of Jaume I to the Assumption of Santa María and it mixes history and art. Its walls and doors also protect treasures as valuable as the Holy Chalice. The documentation and archaeological studies lead us to believe that the Grail of Valencia is the one used by Jesus at the Last Supper. Hence, Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI used this relic in the celebration of the Eucharist on their visits to Valencia. It is a cup of polished agate of oriental origin. Tradition has it that after the Last Supper, Saint Peter took it to Rome and the Popes who succeeded him kept it there until Saint Sixtus II. He sent the relic to Huesca and during the Muslim invasion the chalice was hidden in the Pyrenees and it was Alfonso the Magnanimous who brought the royal reliquary to the Valencia palace. Today it can be seen in the Chapel of the Holy Chalice. Also in the Cathedral is the Cathedral Museum, which exhibits up to 90 works of different styles, Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerist... Among them are the canvases by Maella and Goya or the panel paintings by Juan de Juanes. And for those who enjoy panoramic views, nothing better than the climb to Miguelete. To crown the bell tower you have to climb 207 steps, but the effort is worth it, as they are possibly the best aerial views of the city.
