La caserne Moncada est un haut lieu symbolique de la révolution cubaine. Fidel Castro y a fait sa première tentative de révolution le 26 juillet 1953 qui fut écrasée par le dictateur Batista (et Fidel Castro emprisonné). Ce n'est que quelques années plus tard que sous le nom de mouvement du 26 juillet qu'il conquit le pouvoir en 1959 (mouvement révolutionnaire appelé Movimiento 26 Julio ou M 26-7 et que vous pourrez voir inscrit sur des drapeaux du parti communiste cubain). Transformé en partie en école et en musée, ce dernier se visite et retrace l'histoire de la prise du pouvoir par Fidel Castro. Sur le mur de cette ancienne caserne, on peut encore voir des traces de projectiles du putsch.

The Moncada Barracks was a military barracks in Santiago de Cuba, named after the General Guillermón Moncada, a hero of the Cuban War of Independence. On 26 July 1953, the barracks was the site of an armed attack by a small group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro. This armed attack is widely accepted as the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. The date on which the attack took place, 26 July, was adopted by Castro as the name for his revolutionary movement (Movimiento 26 Julio or M 26-7) which eventually toppled the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista on 12 January 1959. In 1978, Castro ordered the massive perimeter walls rebuilt and converted half of the main building into July 26 Historical Museum

The Moncada Barracks was the second largest military garrison in Cuba, named after the General Guillermón Moncada, a hero of the Cuban War of Independence. The garrison was the site of an armed attack on July 26, 1953 by small group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro. Today the garrison is a primary school and there is also a museum.
