You may see this walking home from the Stampede grounds. The remains of Calgary’s first real hospital built in 1894 stand as a city historical site. The hospital contained only 35 beds, 1 operating room and a small maternity wing that was considered modern for its time with electrical amenities, telephones and a signal bell system. It was later used as an isolation hospital for those with chronic illnesses, and in 1954 was dubbed “operation measles.” The facility then operated as a seniors facility until 1971 when it was acquired by the Calgary Metropolitan Foundation and later demolished. The ruins were kept as a historical site.
