Guan Yu- Chinese commander from the time of the Three Kingdoms, who was executed after being captured in battle. On Koh Samui you will find a huge colourful commemorative statue of him. Around the statue smaller local markets are often held.

WAT GUAN YU Mr. Virach Pongchababnapa, a Sino-Thai resident of Koh Samui, had the crazy project of building a bronze statue 16 meters high, worth 20 million Baht, which is becoming one of the big new Tourist attractions of Koh Samui. The statue represents Guan Yu, a Chinese warlord living in the second century. The completed project will include a building to house a local "Chinatown" with restaurants, shops, and Chinese medicine practitioners. The sanctuary is also used for weddings.
