New Gothic style built in the 19th century by young Austrian architect Georg von Hauberisser.Tower (85m) offers a splendid view (open 10-5).The carillon plays daily at 11am, 12am and 5pm (March-Oct).
A well-known spectacle ensures every day many spectators on the Marienplatz. Punctually at 11 and 12 o'clock - from March to October additionally at 17 o'clock - shows the glockenspiel in the city hall tower two events from the city history of Munich: On the one hand the February 1568 celebrated wedding of Duke William V. with Renate of Lorraine. In honor of the bride and groom a jousting tournament took place on the Marienplatz. The Bavarian knight triumphed over his opponent from Lorraine. The lower floor shows the Schäfflertanz. After a severe plague epidemic, the barrel makers were the first to risk venturing out onto the streets dancing and cheering on the people scared of the plague. Do not miss it!
